Hello love,
What would change in the way you lead your life and business if you knew you only had so much time to live?
My question is blunt. Perhaps a little cliché, it’s true.
Yet, if we take the time to pause and to really consider it, really put ourselves in this situation for a moment, it does bring us some important mindset shifts.
We always hope that we’ll be around with our full capacities for a long time.
My personal goal is 98 years old, but I know that when it comes to the end of my earthly existence, my own desires don’t matter much in the plans of the Universe.
I’m currently 40, going 41. I’m lucky to be healthy.
In the last 18 months, 3 of our same-generation friends have passed. One had a heart attack, two died of cancer. And then there’s my father, who is fighting cancer to his last breath, but might not have the strength to fight for much longer.
Since visiting him last month and seeing him so diminished, I keep hearing the same thing : What the heck are you waiting for?
For what incongruous reason would you keep yourself small, not showing what you’re made of, not sharing your thoughts, your ideas, your interests, your talents? Why wouldn’t you follow your dreams? Why wouldn’t you allow yourself to be a beginner? To suck at something that brings you joy? Why would you stay stuck in soul-sucking job instead of pursuing a career that lifts you up? Or at least take ONE step in that direction? Why would you devote most of your time worrying about money, knowing that 80% of what matters in this lifetime is the quality of your relationships? Why would you care what people think of you? Why would the fear of judgment prevent you from doing, saying and being what you wish to do, say, and be? Why don’t you allow yourself to be more vulnerable, more truthful when it comes to what you feel and what you want? Why would it be hard to say things like I love you, or I’m scared, I want you to stay with me and hold my hand until I fall asleep. Why wouldn’t you get that tattoo?
A few weeks ago, I bought myself some new clothes. It’s a non-event for most people, but I’m a minimalist consumer, so it’s kind of a big deal for me.
I was going to buy some “normal clothes”, the kind of stuff you find everywhere. Then I remembered this online shop that I had been eyeing for years. (Toonzshop, alternative ethic and ethnic fashion - not an affiliate link.)
Years of lurking on their website without ever buying anything because my mind was telling me : but you should be thinner to wear that, but you should be younger to wear that, and what will people think of a 40-year-old mom wearing this kind of clothes, and what if my husband doesn’t like it?
But, like, who cares? Why is any of that important at all?
It’s not.
I bought the clothes.
I love wearing them, I feel like a comfy goddess/witch.
Plus I didn’t receive any complaints so far for wearing them. Even a few compliments. Not that I asked.
And so imagine: what if it were the same for everything else?
What if you told people in your life what you really mean and what you really want? What if you stopped being fearful or “polite”?
What if you tried this new hobby without caring what the final result will be?
What if you started your business, or if you allowed yourself to pivot following not what you think people expect from you, but what you truly feel called to do in this season of your life?
And if what you feel called to do is outside of your current scope, what if you started a training to change that?
What if you started writing content sharing your true thoughts and feelings about the world we live in, telling us about your experience, your wisdom, your humanity?
What if you got rid of all the “shoulds” and replaced them with “wants” and “chooses”?
What if you stopped caring about what your mind is telling you you’re risking, and start caring more about what your heart is craving to do?
What if instead of looking for certainty and strategy, you were surrendering to the flow of life and connecting from the heart?
And finally, what if the result of all that would be at worst, people not caring, and at best them complimenting you and finding the courage to do the same?
Knowing that in the process, you’ll spend most days until your last with a sense of self-fulfilment, purpose and joy.
Seems to me it’s worth giving it a shot.
