create your business like a home
if your business was your home, what would it feel like?
If your business was your home, what would it feel like?
I didn’t grow up in the home of my dreams.
As a kid, I lived with my mother in a small apartment. She had control issues and for me that meant that I couldn’t do much. I couldn’t go out to play, for instance, or learn to ride a bike. I couldn’t paint, either, because it would make too much of a mess. There were books around but they were all on topics like dieting and feminine beauty. Only the Astrology ones were kind of cool. When I visited my father’s place, it was bigger, pristine and elegant, packed with novels, but he was autistic-level organised and I never felt much free there either.
Luckily, I had my own room, and it became my whole universe. I would lock myself in there for hours, losing track of time in imaginary worlds and situations. The time I spent there was my own. There was nobody to tell me what to do, what not to do, how to behave or how to think. I could be silly, I could be smart, I could be sad. I could also make mistakes and it wouldn’t matter.
This, to me, was home.

What is home, if not a feeling?
In my ideal home, there’s a room where I can just read on a velvety armchair, under a fluffy blanket and surrounded with books that look like precious treasures waiting for me to explore.
There’s a garden or a large terrace, with a tiny fairy village, next to which I’ve planted my favourite veggies.
There’s a den somewhere that I’ve turned into a creative nook. A special place where I do all the things I love: write, paint and draw, without ever fearing to make a mess.
There’s a beautiful kitchen, with lots of pots and herbs, with an open window. It looks a bit like the kitchen of Mrs Weasly in Harry Potter, and this is where I cook hearty meals for my loved ones.
Then there’s the dining room, open, comfortable, light. This is where I share cookies, tea and stories with my guests whenever they visit.
Home starts with a feeling.

What does home feel like to you?
To me, it’s a feeling of peace, of freedom to create and explore without pressure, to go at your own rhythm, to follow your inspiration.
A feeling of soft clothes and warmth on your skin as you soak in the sun and take in the fresh scents of Spring.
If I created my business like a home, I would give myself that same feeling.
The freedom to not have to be productive in the same way year-round.
I’d give myself the space to ebb and flow, learn and then teach, read and then write… Ditching the internal pressure to be the one always having inspiring things to say and share, so I can embrace the first principle of abundance: learning to receive.
I’d plant only the vegetables and aromatic herbs I love, when the season is right and not when I’m scared there won’t be enough food in the fridge.
I’d give myself a space where it’s only my world, and I’m surrounded with things that I love and make me feel warm inside.
I’d create from joy only, like an alchemist transforming the hard-earned wisdom into gems in my witchy kitchen. And I’d feel proud and honoured to share them with my guests.
Guests—not people I'd have to convince to come eat at my table, but soul-aligned friends who know my door is open whenever they feel called to share a moment in my world.
Creating a business that feels like a home is such a beautiful reframe.
It reminds you of what it truly means to have a business that works for you.
Because in your ideal home, you feel like you belong, regardless of your preferences, privileges or challenges. You don’t need to dim yourself, or mould yourself into a different shape to fit into the home, it’s the home that is built according to who you are.

When you start creating your business like a home, it becomes natural to design your days around what you truly value.
Here's what that looks like for me…
I choose to homeschool my children, so I need systems and daily rhythms that allow me to be there for them in the morning. That means I’m only available to work in the afternoons. Sometimes, my kids are sick, or the babysitter is sick, and life gets messy. If my business is my home, I understand that working on copywriting projects is more aligned for me that hourly-paid work because it offers me flexibility. Plus, I want the freedom to be inspired when I’m inspired.
In some seasons, I feel energetic enough to wake up before the sun rises so I can put in another couple of hours of writing. But I’m definitely not designed to do that every day, or all year long. If my business is my home, I can give myself the flexibility of the seasonality, and trust that what I do is enough.
My time is limited. If my business is my home, I know that following time-consuming marketing strategies like having a YouTube channel or even recording a weekly podcast is not for me right now. So I choose writing, and trust that the right people will read my words when they need them.
I’m highly sensitive, and I must tend to my nervous system on a daily basis, especially when I do more stressful tasks like reaching out to others for collaborations or to offer my services. If my business is my home, I understand that white space in between my tasks is essential to give myself the care that I need, not just to get the work done, but to feel like I’m thriving.
Those are just my examples, but I wonder what it would look like for you, if your business was your home?
When you build your business like a true home, you create a space that welcomes you first.
And from that deep feeling of belonging, of being adequate and in the right place, your people find you.
You never have to push your own boundaries or compromise your nature.
Instead, you get to grow at your own rhythm, create, be nurtured, and share the fruits of your harvest, like a garden that knows when to bloom and when to rest.
In that way, maybe the true magic of entrepreneurship isn’t about scaling endlessly, but about coming home to yourself, again and again. And letting everything you offer be an expression of that feeling of home.
That’s the road I’m taking. And if you’re reading this, I know you can too.
Power and light,
Jessica
